An imperial legacy
Archbishop Bruno, brother of Emperor Otto the Great, founded a Benedictine monastery here in 955. The Byzantine princess Theophanu, wife of Emperor Otto II, was buried in St. Pantaleon in 991 – her tomb still recalls Cologne's close ties to the empire. The massive westwork is among the most important works of Ottonian architecture.
