Building history
A collegiate foundation arose here in the 10th century; in the early 11th century came the great Salian "Pilgrim building" that set the dimensions of today's church. Like St Peter's in Rome, it originally faced west. Around 1200–1230 the nave and transept received stone vaults. The striking trefoil east end makes St. Aposteln a highlight of Rhineland Romanesque architecture.
