St. George's Church

A Romanesque columned basilica in the Südstadt, called the ‘Ravenna on the Rhine' – with ancient columns from Roman buildings.

St. George is one of Cologne's twelve great Romanesque churches, in the southern old town. Because of its original columned interior it earned the honorary title "Ravenna on the Rhine".

Ancient columns, Romanesque space

From 1059 Archbishop Anno II had a three-aisled columned basilica built over a hall crypt; the columns used were taken from Roman structures. The impressive sense of space gave the church its nickname. A massive west choir vaulted by a pendentive dome was later added, making St. George one of the most distinctive Romanesque buildings in Cologne.
