Ancient columns, Romanesque space
From 1059 Archbishop Anno II had a three-aisled columned basilica built over a hall crypt; the columns used were taken from Roman structures. The impressive sense of space gave the church its nickname. A massive west choir vaulted by a pendentive dome was later added, making St. George one of the most distinctive Romanesque buildings in Cologne.
