since 1903
The Adolph Kolping Monument stands at Kolpingplatz in front of the Minorite Church in Cologne. It commemorates Adolph Kolping (1813–1865), the founder of the Catholic journeymen's associations from which today's Kolpingwerk grew, and who is interred in the church behind it.

The Motif
The sculpture depicts the priest Adolph Kolping in a cassock, reaching out his hand in a solemn, fatherly farewell to a journeyman setting off on his travels. This two-figure composition deliberately sets the work apart from the lone statues of national and cultural figureheads being erected in great numbers at the time.
Origins
The design was created by Johann Baptist Schreiner, a sculptor born and trained in Munich who settled in Cologne from 1894. The monument was funded entirely through donations from members of the Kolpingwerk.
Location and Surroundings
The monument occupies the square between the Minorite Church and the international headquarters of Kolping International. The WDR broadcasting centre is located nearby.
