Did you know?

Unlike the many solo-statue monuments fashionable at the time, the sculpture deliberately shows Kolping shaking hands with a journeyman setting off on his travels, making the social mission of the Kolping movement the centrepiece of the design rather than heroic solitude.

The Motif

The sculpture depicts the priest Adolph Kolping in a cassock, reaching out his hand in a solemn, fatherly farewell to a journeyman setting off on his travels. This two-figure composition deliberately sets the work apart from the lone statues of national and cultural figureheads being erected in great numbers at the time.

Origins

The design was created by Johann Baptist Schreiner, a sculptor born and trained in Munich who settled in Cologne from 1894. The monument was funded entirely through donations from members of the Kolpingwerk.
