Just northwest of Neumarkt, a larger-than-life bronze statue commemorates Konrad Adenauer – mayor of Cologne and the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The monument was unveiled on 1 July 1995.

After sculptor Hans Wimmer died in 1991, the statue was left headless for a time – it was only completed afterwards by his student Gerd Weiland.

Artist & Origins
The project was driven by a committee founded in 1987 to erect an Adenauer monument at Neumarkt, which raised the funds through donations. The path to the finished figure was marked by setbacks: the artist first chosen for the commission died before it was awarded. The task then went to Munich sculptor Hans Wimmer, who began work in 1991 but died the same year. His student Gerd Weiland completed the statue, which was still headless at that point.
Description
Adenauer is shown in a larger-than-life coat that dominates the figure and makes his head appear comparatively small. In his right hand he holds a hat. The statue reflects the different stages of his career: mayor of Cologne, president of the Prussian State Council and federal chancellor.
