Konrad Adenauer Barracks

Home to Germany's Federal Office for Military Counterintelligence: a Bundeswehr site in Cologne-Raderthal, named after Konrad Adenauer.

The site's namesake, Konrad Adenauer, West Germany's first chancellor, was born in Cologne. It was built in the 1960s after the federal government decided to relocate as many defense ministry agencies as possible to the Cologne area.

Did you know?

The military counter-intelligence service moved in because the newly built barracks let it dictate special construction requirements such as dedicated file rooms and laboratories, while also sharing the site's modern bunker facilities.

Headquarters of Military Counterintelligence

The new building was originally intended for the then-Truppenamt (Army Office). While planning was still underway, the idea arose to also relocate the MAD headquarters, the Amt für Sicherheit der Bundeswehr (ASBw), here from Bonn. This let the ASBw incorporate its own construction requirements, for instance for record archives and laboratories, while sharing security and the modern bunker facilities. The ASBw moved in at the end of 1964. It was renamed Amt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst in 1984, and Bundesamt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst (BAMAD) in 2017.

Changing Occupants

Over the years, besides the MAD and the Truppenamt, the barracks housed several other units, including the 6th Company of Military Police Battalion 730 and Support Commands 3 and WHNS. The Truppenamt was renamed Heeresamt in 1970, which merged into the Amt für Heeresentwicklung in 2013. Following a change in usage plans, that office moved in 2023 to the Axa Campus in Cologne-Holweide, where the Federal Agency for Real Estate had leased two buildings; the official handover took place on 5 May 2023. Since then, BAMAD has been the barracks' sole primary occupant.

Surroundings and the Building Across the Street

The Cologne Südfriedhof (South Cemetery) lies to the west, the Militärringstraße runs along the south side, and the Brühler Straße borders it to the east. Directly across that street stands another Bundeswehr property, referred to simply as the "Dienstgebäude" (office building). Its twelve-story tower once housed the Luftwaffe's central personnel office and the Höherer Pionierstab (later the Bundeswehr Infrastructure Staff). From 1 April 1971 to 30 November 2012, it also housed the Cologne district military registration office (Kreiswehrersatzamt).
