Location on the Rhine
As a widening strip of land, the meadow stretches north from the Zoobrücke to the Mülheimer Brücke. Part of the area lies in the river's flood zone; a flood dyke planted as an avenue protects the hinterland behind it, which also holds Cologne's youth hostel. This hinterland was raised by about eight metres with wartime rubble – either as early as 1955 or only for the garden show – to a flood-safe level. Loose groups of trees define the scene today.
Federal Garden Show 1971
In 1971 the Riehler Aue was one of the two exhibition sites of the Federal Garden Show. The roughly 16-hectare flood area in front of the dyke could not be landscaped; the some eleven hectares behind the dyke were used instead. After the show most installations were removed – the path layout and tree plantings remained. A former open-air pool on the site was turned into a garden restaurant after it closed.
