Origins and Design
The design came from garden architect Fritz Encke, who as royal horticultural director and Cologne's municipal garden director shaped many other parks and squares across the city. The area was planted with hedges, perennials and flowers. The square is also home to the fish-rider fountain by Georg Grasegger, built years later and likewise heritage-protected. Play equipment was later added in the centre of the green, turning the square into a playground.
The Name
The square and street are named after Theophano, wife of Otto II and empress of the Holy Roman Empire.
