History
The cemetery opened in 1904 for the then-independent town of Mülheim, which had previously buried its citizens in two denominational cemeteries: the old Catholic and the old Protestant cemetery. The new municipal cemetery was intended to compete with those two sites.
For this reason, burials were initially separated by denomination here as well. Among the row graves, plots for Catholics lay to the right of the main path and those for Protestants to the left.
Setting
The grounds have a roughly triangular shape. They are bordered by Frankfurter Straße, the Höhenberger Ring, and the A 4 motorway.
Architecture and Nature
As is typical of Cologne's large cemeteries, the grounds are laid out like a park. At the main entrance on Frankfurter Straße stands the three-part gatehouse with the brick building of the cemetery administration, dating from 1903 and now protected as a historic monument.
The building is flanked by two weeping beeches (Fagus sylvatica Pendula), which are listed as natural monuments.
Good to Know
Mülheim Cemetery should not be confused with the New Mülheim Cemetery, another name for the Schönrather Hof cemetery on Haslacher Weg, which was not laid out until 1967.
