Oberer Mutzbach Nature Reserve
A protected area in eastern Cologne with remnant riparian woodland and rare geological features of the Bergische Heideterrasse.
The Oberer Mutzbach Nature Reserve lies in the east of Cologne and protects riparian woodland areas as well as habitats for endangered bird species. It forms part of the Bergische Heideterrasse.

Location
The reserve extends across the districts of Dellbrück and Dünnwald and forms the western continuation of the Mutzbach Nature Reserve in the Dünnwald forest. The two protected areas are separated by Katterbachstraße, which here also runs along the city boundary with Bergisch Gladbach.
In geographical terms, the area belongs to the Bergische Heideterrasse, a strip of landscape along the eastern edge of the Cologne Bay.
Purpose of Protection
Designation as a nature reserve serves to preserve and restore the ecological community of riparian woodland areas. A key concern is the protection of particularly endangered bird species and their habitats.
Scientific and geological-historical reasons also play a role: the geological features found in the area are considered rare in North Rhine-Westphalia and help justify its protected status.
