Did you know?

The pond bears Konrad Adenauer's name because the former mayor of Cologne and German chancellor was a passionate rose breeder – fitting for the rose garden created together with the pond in 1957.

How it got its name

The name refers to Konrad Adenauer, who served as Mayor of Cologne and later as German Chancellor. What earned him the honour, though, was not his political career but a hobby: Adenauer bred roses. A rose garden was laid out alongside the pond in 1957 — so the name links the horticultural show grounds with the rose-breeding politician.

The 1971 redesign

The pond was reworked for the second Federal Horticultural Show held in the Rheinpark. Three crown fountains with water jets were added, designed by Kurt Schönbohm. Two of them survive today, both in the northern part of the pond.

Construction

Adenauerteich is built as a liner pond. The liner on the bed is the reason the pond stays filled with water through the summer: the layer of water protects the material.
