History

In 1904 Peter Josef Früh built his top-fermenting brewhouse on Am Hof in the building of the former 'Central-Theater' – previously the 'Schützenliesel' tavern – laying the foundation of today's Cölner Hofbräu FRÜH. Cologne was hit hard in the Second World War; the main building, already damaged several times, burned out completely in February 1944. After reconstruction the site kept growing: in 1989 'Hof 14', the former 'Weinhaus Zur Glocke', added today's Glockenstube, and in 1996 the Wappensaal expanded by 245 seats into the former cask-filling rooms. In 1998, after the new brewery was built on the city outskirts, the medieval vaulted cellars were exposed and – by the house's own account as Cologne's first brewhouse cellar – opened for dining; the same year the Hofbräustuben were created in the family's former living quarters.

Rooms and features

The heart of the house is the rustic ground floor in the style of a Cologne tavern. The vaulted cellar with its own bar rests on historic arches; the first floor holds the Kölner and Kamin rooms overlooking the beer garden and the Heinzelmännchen fountain, and in summer a glass-roofed courtyard terrace opens. At the very top the light-filled FRÜH Lounge seats up to 150 and suits celebrations and conferences – with a view of the cathedral.
