A Long Brewing History

The building’s roots reach far back into the Middle Ages. Back then the brewhouse went by names such as „Zum Hunen“, „Zum Huntgin“ and „Zum hohen Durpel“; around 1500 the house brewery was called „Zur Teschen“. When the French abolished the guilds in Cologne in 1798, the business traded as „Zur Täsch“ and belonged to town councillor and Gaffel member Christian Schuld.

Changing Landlords and Brewers

Throughout the 19th century the owners came and went: from Heinrich Schult to Johann Flatten, Anton Hintzen and Sophia Decker, who is listed as owner in the brewing register. Later, brewers including Gottfried Thelen, Peter Brauweiler, Heinrich Hilgers and Peter Werker made their beer here. Reiner Schallenberg became the last brewer of this traditional brewery – three years after his death, his widow ended brewing operations in 1907.

From Brewhouse to Bierhaus

The house continued as a pub into the 1970s and was rebuilt several times during that period. Restaurateurs Markus Zehnpfennig and Werner Becker reopened it under its current name in 2003. The medieval structure, with its characteristic two-storey hall (Dielenhalle) and mezzanine level, was restored in the original style.

Today

Furnished in a rustic brewhouse style, the Bierhaus serves exclusively Kölsch from the Päffgen brewery and offers mainly regional Rhenish specialities and various meat dishes. As one of the historic stops on the Cologne brewery trail, it pairs a good beer with a slice of the city’s history.
