The Event

The afternoon opens with an open-air supporting programme featuring live music across multiple stages. As evening falls, the main fireworks light up the river in a sequence of displays spread along the waterway. More than 60 passenger ships sail past the pyrotechnics in a grand convoy.

The Main Fireworks

The centrepiece is fired by pyrotechnics manufacturer WECO from two large pontoon vessels. The 192-metre fireworks ship Colombia I+II moves into the stretch between Zoobrücke and Hohenzollernbrücke once the Rhine is closed to freight traffic, then holds position mid-river. For half an hour, the fireworks unfold in precise rhythm and mood with the accompanying music, broadcast from both riverbanks and the ships. Since 2005, public broadcaster WDR has aired the event live on television.

History

The idea of a fireworks display on the Rhine goes back to the early 19th century — the Kölnische Zeitung reported in 1817 on an illumination of Cologne featuring a firework set off from a ship in the middle of the river. Originally held each July, the last edition before a hiatus took place in 2019. The event was suspended from 2020 to 2024, first due to COVID-19 restrictions and later because of uncertain funding and rising costs in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It returned on 30 August 2025.

Kölner Stadtachter Regatta

Since 2005, the run-up to the fireworks has also featured the Kölner Stadtachter, a rowing regatta with roots going back to 1909, organised by Kölner RV 1877. Clubs from Cologne and neighbouring cities take part, and the combination of riverside crowds and live television coverage gives the regatta a remarkably wide audience.
