Institut français Köln

Commissioned by the city, Cologne architect Wilhelm Riphahn completed the building in 1952, based on an agreement between the French Republic and the University of Cologne. The plain, functional structure was inaugurated on 15 January 1953 and is now a protected monument.

Although the building belongs to the University of Cologne, the French government acts as the institute's employer and pays rent there — making it an official outpost of the French Republic, subordinate to the embassy. The director holds diplomatic status and typically teaches as a visiting lecturer at the university. Since January 2010 a Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on France and the Francophone World has deepened this partnership, involving Romance scholars, political scientists, historians and a media studies researcher, with the embassy contributing a quarter of its €180,000 budget.

Lectures bring scholars, politicians and journalists reporting on developments in France. The cultural calendar also features films in their original language, exhibitions by French and Francophone artists, and a Franco-German choir, along with guest appearances by musicians and theatre groups. A library is available for research; language courses and literary discussion groups round out the offering.

The support association "Friends of the Institut français Köln" was founded in January 2009. It is chaired by Cologne notary Konrad Adenauer, a grandson of the former Federal Chancellor of the same name.
