Architecture and Construction
The tent structure is carried by six slender lightweight masts, each 10 m long. The roof is made up of twelve identical, interconnected segments arranged in a star shape around a ring with a central opening of 28 m². This arrangement gives the outer edges their characteristic wave-like movement. The roof surface of around 1000 m² was originally made of cotton sailcloth. The underlying dance floor itself had already been built in 1950 by the architect Josef Op Gen Oorth.
History and Heritage Protection
The roof was originally planned only for the year of the garden show. Because it proved very popular, it was dismantled in winter and re-erected in summer over several years. After the tent had been completely removed for some years, it was rebuilt in 2001 and extensively restored; the cotton was replaced with coated polyester Polyplan, and the covered area has since measured 500 m². The roof structure is a listed monument together with other buildings of the Tanzbrunnen. Frei Otto continued to develop membrane construction, which reached a high point in the roofing of the main sports facilities at the Munich Olympic site, realised with Günter Behnisch and his architectural office.
The Sternwellenzelt is among the early examples of Frei Otto's membrane architecture and still shapes the appearance of Cologne's Tanzbrunnen today.
