Origins

The event began in the 1980s as a small Christopher Street Day, a name that refers to the Stonewall riots on Christopher Street in New York City. Within the liberal political culture of the former West Germany, it grew into one of the country's largest celebration events. In more recent years, education about and support for AIDS became an important part of it.
