DITIB Central Mosque Cologne-Chorweiler

The building was erected in 1998 on Morsestraße and originally housed a civil engineering firm. In 2005 the mosque association, founded two years earlier, bought the complex and moved in on a provisional basis that same year. After about three years of planning, change of use and conversion, the Islamic community centre with its mosque was completed in 2008 — fulfilling an aspiration that the district's Muslim population had pursued since the 1970s. The congregation draws mainly on Muslims from the nearby quarters of Chorweiler and Seeberg.

The association sees itself not only as a place of prayer but also as a meeting place, and is active in the district's cultural, social and civic life. During the fasting month of Ramadan it has hosted a communal breaking of the fast every evening since 2009, and since 2012 an annual Intercultural Iftar with guests from churches and other faith communities as well as from the police, local politics and city society. Since 2011 it has taken part regularly with its own stand at the Festival of Cultures on Pariser Platz. It is a founding member of the Round Table for Peace set up in 2014, helps organise the Chorweiler Evening of Peace — at which the Chorweiler Peace Bell, cast in 2014, has since been rung — and signed the General Chorweiler Peace Declaration in 2015. After 2015 the association launched a donation campaign and helped support refugees housed in the district; it is also a founding member of the civic platform Stark! im Kölner Norden. Since 2010 the call to prayer has been broadcast five times a day at limited volume through an outdoor speaker onto the inner courtyard. In 2012 members founded the independent football club DITIB Chorweiler Sport e.V., which maintains an office in the complex.

Since opening, the mosque has repeatedly been the target of night-time anti-Muslim offences by unknown perpetrators. In March 2012 swastikas were daubed on the road in front of the mosque and a neighbouring building and removed by the city. In July 2019 there was a break-in in which the board office was ransacked and cash stolen. In April 2020, on the night before the mosque reopened after the first coronavirus lockdown, it was pelted with stones, damaging the main entrance; the attack prompted expressions of solidarity, including a visit by Mayor Henriette Reker. As of 2023 the offences remained unsolved. In November 2023 Abdul Bari Omar, head of the food and drug authority of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, appeared in the event hall without the association's consent and contrary to the contractual agreement; the hall had been made available to individuals from the board of the Kulturverein der Kunar-Jugendlichen e.V. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called the appearance "utterly unacceptable". According to the Federal Prosecutor General, the Taliban have not been classified as a terrorist organisation under the criminal code since their takeover in 2021. The mosque association strongly condemned the appearance and banned the organiser from the premises.
