History
The area originally belonged to the Benedictine abbey of St. Pantaleon, founded in the 9th century, and as part of the monastery precinct was separated from the city of Cologne by a wall. Historical sketches show it was used for growing wine. Only in the 20th century did the municipal park emerge here.
The Park Today
Its defining feature is a large, oval lawn ringed by a footpath with benches. In the north a few large trees restrict the summer view of the former monastery church; six of the park's trees are protected as natural monuments, among them three plane trees, a sweet chestnut, a beech and a hackberry (Zürgelbaum). To the west lies a large playground with old trees, to the east a community garden. The park is popular with dog owners all year round.
