History
The tower was completed in 1973 for the Cologne-based insurance group Gerling, which wanted a prestigious landmark visible from afar. Gerling used the building itself until 2011. In March of that year it changed hands: a property developer took over the tower and began marketing it as privately owned apartments. The former corporate headquarters thus became a residential building, today housing 89 apartments, some of which are used commercially. Even the adjoining car park gained six new apartments during the conversion, accessible from within the Ringturm.
Architecture
The Ringturm is built of reinforced concrete and carries a suspended concrete curtain wall that gives the structure its distinctive appearance. Especially striking is its geometric footprint, modelled on a heptagon. Its 26 floors hold a combined 6,507 m² of residential and office space, with the first ten storeys originally laid out as offices. The complex is rounded out by an integrated car park covering 2,380 m².
