History
The collection's roots go back to 1994, when the private 1st German Toyota Museum was founded in Hartkirchen. After the operator's death, Toyota Germany took over the vehicles in 2017. The original stock comprised 120 vehicles; individual models that existed in multiples were given away, while some cars from Toyota's own holdings were added. For its new home, a sports hall on the Cologne company grounds was repurposed into an exhibition space, which opened on 23 November 2017.
The Collection
On display are numerous milestones of the brand, including the Corolla, Land Cruiser, Celica and Crown, along with the RAV4, the 2000 GT, Tercel, Model F, Starlet and Supra, as well as the 1000, Century and Prius. The exhibition is rounded out by several Lexus models, racing cars, rally vehicles, prototypes and cutaway models. How many vehicles are actually shown at any given time varies by source – figures of roughly 70, 75 or 108 cars are cited. According to Wikipedia, the journalist Marie Schäfers ranks the exhibition among the best car museums and collections in Germany.
Visiting and Opening Hours
The collection can be visited on one Saturday per month – specifically the first Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:00, with free admission. On these opening days there are changing themes, and the exhibition also serves as a meeting point for the Toyota community. Two free guided tours are offered each day.
