At a glance

  • Style: Romanesque (galleried basilica, c. 1200–1225)
  • Location: Altstadt-Süd, near the Rhine
  • Notable: 13th-century vault frescoes
  • Venerated: the "Boatmen's Madonna"

A gem by the Rhine

Because of its position near the Rhine, the church once served above all the boatmen at prayer – the "Boatmen's Madonna" is still venerated here today. Its greatest treasure is the colourful frescoes on the vaults, which alone among the twelve Romanesque churches have largely survived the passing centuries.
