History
The parish has roots stretching back to 1444, when a chapel was founded in honour of the Virgin Mary. A replacement building dedicated to Saint Hubertus and Saint Anthony followed in 1708, itself replaced by a new structure between 1863 and 1865. In 1889 the community was separated from the parish of Merheim and elevated to an independent parish. As the existing chapel soon proved inadequate, plans for a proper parish church were set in motion.
Architecture
The current church was built in 1930/31 to designs by Noven and Willach in a modernist idiom. It is a hall church of rendered brick beneath a pitched roof; a rectangular chancel originally housing the high altar extends to the south. In the early 1970s the organ was relocated from the north gallery into the south chancel, whose altar area was screened off by a low partition wall. In the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, a new celebration altar by Dieter Boers was placed forward into the nave.
Interior
The interior retains a full set of coloured windows dating from 1931. Above the altar hangs an oak cross designed by Walter Prinz, bearing a bronze corpus rendered in cubic forms. The church's prized possession is a statue of the Virgin Mary from the last quarter of the 15th century.
Parish and Surroundings
The church complex includes a parish hall, parish office, a Catholic kindergarten, and a library. Directly opposite stands St. Vinzenzhaus, a care home for the elderly. St. Hubertus Brück and St. Gereon Merheim together form the Brück-Merheim parish association — with just two parishes, one of the smaller groupings in the Archdiocese.
