Although the church is Roman Catholic, it was admitted in 2024 to the network of (Protestant) cycling churches – an interdenominational opening for cyclists and hikers along the Cologne–Koblenz premium cycle route.
History
The parish church was built between 1890 and 1891 to designs by Heinrich Nagelschmidt, using local stonemasons and bricklayers. Its stained-glass windows, destroyed in the Second World War, were restored in three phases starting in 1953. From 1979 to 1980, the original Neo-Gothic interior painting was reconstructed.
Furnishings and Windows
Three Neo-Gothic carved altars and the organ case survive from the original furnishings. In 1982/83 a matching pulpit was added, brought from St. Anthony's Church in Kürten-Bechen. Since 1900 the central choir window has displayed stained glass in the Nazarene style depicting saints. The side-aisle windows, designed by Franz Pauli, illustrate the Joyful and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary; the remaining panes were designed by K. Dedy in 1990.
Cycling and Hiking Church
In 2024 St. Clemens joined the Protestant network of cycling-route churches. Open daily since then, the church invites cyclists and hikers to rest, meditate, or pray, with a quiet chapel space inside. Outside, seating, a table, bicycle racks, a drinking-water fountain, and a bicycle pump have been added, and a snack stand and restaurant are nearby. In coordination with the heritage authority and the Archdiocese of Cologne, the church is being made barrier-free, while Sunday services continue as usual.
