At a glance

  • Founded: 1990 (as DOMiT)
  • Base: the district town hall in Cologne-Ehrenfeld
  • Collection: over 150,000 objects, documents, photos, films and sound recordings since 1945
  • Planned: a large migration museum under the name "Selma"

The memory of a migration society

The collection, unique in Germany, ranges from everyday objects and work clothing to a Ford Transit that symbolises the era of the so-called guest workers. It covers migration into both West and East Germany in all its forms.

Visitor note

DOMiD is primarily an archive and documentation centre; the collection is open to researchers by appointment. It also offers tours, events and educational programmes. A permanent exhibition venue is planned only with the future museum.
