Founded in 1920, the Studiobühne Köln is the oldest university theatre in Germany – for over 100 years it has uniquely occupied the space between academic institution and independent theatre.
History
What began as a conventional theatre operation expanded in the late 1960s into an experimental field reaching beyond theatre itself. Since the 1970s, the Studiobühne has also functioned as a film workshop, offering opportunities in filmmaking, photo exhibitions, stage dance, and theatrical production. Georg Franke (1947–2024) directed the venue from 1970 to 2009, followed by Dietmar Kobboldt until the end of 2023. Since then, Stawrula Panagiotaki — formerly a dramaturg at Schauspiel Köln — has led the Studiobühne.
Training and Support
The University of Cologne funds and runs a comprehensive training programme: around 450 students are taught by 15 instructors in theatre, film, video, and photography. Additional financial support comes from the City of Cologne's cultural office, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Kunststiftung NRW arts foundation.
Programme and Festivals
The Studiobühne sees itself as a forum for its own productions as well as co-productions with professional Cologne-based independent groups and partners from Germany and abroad. Its focus lies on exploring artistic methods, working with different media, and intermedial experimentation. Each year it hosts the binational festival "theaterszene europa" — university theatre weeks with international partners, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
