District
Ostheim
Part of borough Kalk
Ostheim is an eastern district of Cologne, located in the right-bank borough of Kalk. Once a small farming village belonging to the parish of Merheim, it grew during industrialization into a residential area for workers at the factories in Kalk and Mülheim, and it became an independent district when the mayoralty of Merheim was incorporated into Cologne on 1 April 1914. After the Second World War, housing shortages and expanding industry led to several new housing estates, more than tripling the population between 1950 and 1980. The high-rise area built along Gernsheimer Straße in the 1970s became a social trouble spot, which authorities and private initiatives are working to improve through various measures.
