District
Höhenberg
Part of borough Kalk
Höhenberg sits in the eastern, right-bank part of Cologne and belongs to the Kalk district. For centuries the name merely denoted a slight rise in the terrain, where the historic border between Kurköln and the Duchy of Berg once ran; only the industrialisation of the neighbouring towns of Kalk and Mülheim opened up the area, which became an independent quarter in 1927 after the GAG built the Germania housing estate. Although many apartment blocks went up after the Second World War and the population nearly doubled between 1950 and 1980, more than half of Höhenberg still consists of green space. Long shaped by factory closures in the surrounding industrial zones, the quarter is supported by civic initiatives such as the HöVi-Land network.
