Gestüt Röttgen

Germany's largest thoroughbred stud farm. In Maria Mehl-Mülhens' time, its Irish branch produced Star Appeal, winner of the 1975 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Thoroughbreds for flat racing are bred on the grounds in Cologne, and the estate also runs its own racing stable. It takes its name from Schloss Röttgen, which belonged to the stud for a long time.

Did you know?

Gestüt Röttgen already produced its first Derby winner in 1932 with Palastpage, and in 1975 the stallion Star Appeal became the first, and for a long time the only, German horse to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Star Appeal

The stallion Star Appeal came from the Irish branch that the stud maintained during Maria Mehl-Mülhens' time. His victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1975 was the first win in that race by a German horse. For a long time, no other German horse managed to win it.

Derby Winners from Röttgen

As early as 1932, the stud produced its first Derby winner with Palastpage. Uomo followed in 1959. Kallisto, also a Röttgen horse, won the Italian Derby.

From Founding Family to Foundation

After the founder, his daughter Maria Mehl-Mülhens took over the management of the stud and racing stable. She established the Mehl-Mülhens Foundation, which took ownership of the stud after her death.
