Dom-Brauerei

The Cologne brewery behind Dom Kölsch: from two house breweries of the 1870s to its sale to the Radeberger Group in 2013.

In 1938, the owners, the Funke family, former colliery operators from Essen, renamed the brewery Dom-Brauerei Carl Funke AG. Before that, the company had been known as Hirsch-Brauerei and Adler-Hirsch-AG, among other names.

While the brewery was still under construction on 7 August 1898, a tornado severely damaged parts of its facilities, including the newly built brewhouse.

Beginnings in Cologne's South

It all started with two small house breweries run by Johann Joseph Creischer and Cornelius Schieffer, which merged in the 1870s. Both were based on Alteburger Straße. After Carl Göters and the Steingröver brothers took them over, the Hirsch-Brauerei Göter & Steingröver was established in Köln-Bayenthal. On 7 August 1898, while construction was still under way, a tornado severely damaged parts of the complex, including the newly built brewhouse.

Growth Through Acquisitions

From 1900, the company operated as Hirsch-Brauerei and became a joint-stock company. It acquired several smaller breweries in Cologne and the surrounding area. The main products were Hirsch Gold Export and Hirsch-Edel-Pils, which were also sold beyond the region. In 1931 it merged with the Ehrenfeld-based Adler-Brauerei, and in 1935/36 it bought the Westmark-Brauerei Christian Sünner GmbH.

The Road to Kölsch

The brewery was largely destroyed in the Second World War, and repairs dragged on until 1956. Afterwards, it mainly produced Dom Kölsch. From 1974, it brewed only Kölsch, namely Dom-Kölsch and Stern-Kölsch. In 1998, Stern Brauerei Carl Funke AG was renamed Dom-Brauerei AG.

The End of In-House Production

In 2001, the company sold the production site on Tacitusstraße and took over a production facility, event rooms and a beer garden from Küppers Kölsch Brauerei. A brewery museum was set up in these premises. Owing to financial difficulties, in-house beer production ended in late 2005. From January 2006, Erzquell Brauerei Bielstein brewed the beers under contract. The site on Alteburger Straße was sold in 2006 and has since been levelled.

Dom Kölsch Today

Within the Radeberger Gruppe, Dom Kölsch belongs to the Haus Kölscher Brautradition. The group has its Kölsch brands brewed at the Cölner Hofbräu Früh plant in Köln-Feldkassel, after giving up its own brewery in Köln-Mülheim.
