Layout
The complex consists of two parts: the Congress-Centrum Ost and the Congress-Centrum Nord. Both are linked by a covered exhibition boulevard, from which visitors can also reach Eventhalle 9 directly – a hall that seats up to 9,600 people. Its facilities include the Congress-Saal, the Kristallsaal, the Konrad-Adenauer-Saal and the divisible Rheinsaal, offering spaces that range from small meetings to full shareholder assemblies.
History
The conference and congress business was important to Cologne's trade fair from early on: the 1925 spring fair was the first major event to include numerous attached congresses. As success grew in the 1950s, the fair expanded its congress facilities. From 1973 the exhibition grounds were modernised, and by 1977 the new eastern halls and the Congress-Centrum Ost were complete. Until 2005 the fair ran two independent venues – Congress-Centrum Ost and West. As part of a master plan to redesign the entire grounds, four modern halls were built, and in 2006 the Congress-Centrum Nord opened as a replacement for the former Congress-Centrum West.
Use Today
The centre is heavily booked: in 2017 it hosted 1,123 events drawing around 193,000 visitors. The programme spans congresses, conferences and meetings as well as trade fairs, concerts, and social and Carnival events. Alongside supporting programmes for fairs and congresses, it has repeatedly welcomed specialist medical conferences.
