Location
The meadow stretches between Gleueler Straße and the Franz-Kremer-Stadion and borders the Militärring. Old trees frame it. It forms part of the L17 landscape protection area, which covers the Outer Green Belt from Müngersdorf to Marienburg together with connecting green corridors.
Ecology
Across its 4.8 hectares, the Gleueler Wiese provides habitat for many animal and plant species. As a hay meadow it also matters for the local climate: it acts as a cold-air corridor. Its loamy soil can store rainwater.
Origin of the Name
The meadow is named after Gleuel, a quarter of the town of Hürth. The nearby Gleueler Straße leads out of the city towards it.
Dispute over Use
The football club 1. FC Köln wants to expand the RheinEnergieSportpark with a training centre featuring three artificial turf pitches and to use the Gleueler Wiese for this. The plan has met with both rejection and approval among the public and in local politics.
