History
Haus Herl traces its origins to a moated castle – a complex once surrounded by water and protected by it. Such moated castles were typically built in low-lying, water-rich locations, exactly the kind provided by the Strunde stream. Today the site is no longer a fortified castle, yet its roots as a defended residence remain.
The Ensemble with the Herl Mill
Haus Herl belongs together with the Herl Mill, so the two buildings are regarded as a single ensemble. Their heritage status reflects this significance: the mill has been protected since 1984, and Haus Herl followed in 1990. The proximity to the water of the Strunde explains why a mill settled here – flowing water supplied the power it needed.
Location
Haus Herl lies in Buchheim on the right bank of the Rhine, north of the Merheim Heath and on the Buchheimer Ring. The Strunde stream beside the site shapes the surroundings and forms the historic link between castle and mill.
