From Family Park to Thrill Rides
The park opened in 1967 with a family focus and later added thrill rides, especially in recent years. Because its grounds are comparatively small, it brings in new attractions more often than other German parks to free up room. Following Europa-Park's example, it has also courted business customers under the slogan “Business to Pleasure”. In visitor polls it regularly ranks among the world's leading theme parks.
Coasters and Themed Worlds
Taron, described as the world's third fastest multi-launch coaster, anchors the Klugheim area alongside the more family-oriented Raik. Black Mamba, an African-themed Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster, opened in 2006. The Mine Train coaster Colorado Adventure runs through the Mexico section and was opened by Michael Jackson. F.L.Y., a Vekoma launched flying coaster, is the most recent addition and is described as the first launched flying coaster and the longest of its kind.
Water Rides and the Mystery Area
Chiapas: DIE Wasserbahn, a log flume opened in 2014, threads through a landscape of canyons and mountains and replaced two earlier water attractions. The indoor Mystery area is built around Mystery Castle, an Intamin bungee drop set inside a walk-through haunted castle. Beside it runs River Quest, a rapids ride from 2002 that once held the record for the largest drop on a rafting ride until Infinity Falls at SeaWorld Orlando surpassed it. The space for River Quest came from a cable fire on 1 May 2001 that destroyed two coasters, a theatre and parts of the Westernstadt, injured 54 people and prompted about €2 million in fire-safety upgrades.
Hotels and Shows
The four-star, Chinese-themed Hotel Ling Bao opened in 2004 with roof tiles imported from China and hand-engraved room doors, plus its own entrance to the park. The three-star Matamba followed in 2008 in the Deep in Africa section. On select evenings the park stages the dinner show Fantissima, which runs about four hours.
