St. Mechtern
Catholic parish church in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, built in 1954 by Rudolf Schwarz, continuing the tradition of Cologne's martyr church Mechtern.
The name recalls the legend of the Theban Legion, to which the earlier Cologne martyr church of Mechtern traces its origins.

Of the neo-Romanesque domed basilica built in 1909 as the predecessor building, only the ground floor of the tower survived its near-total destruction in World War II, and it is now used as a chapel.
From Predecessor to New Building
A neo-Romanesque domed basilica once stood on this site, erected by Eduard Endler in 1909. It was largely destroyed during the Second World War. From the plans of Rudolf Schwarz emerged the present-day parish church.
Surviving Elements
The ground floor of the old tower survived and is now used as a chapel space. Together with the rectory from 1914/15, this tower remnant forms the listed heritage substance of the ensemble.
Bells
Of the three bronze bells, two were cast only after the Second World War.
