Origins
As early as 1964, the LVR was already considering an admissions clinic in Cologne with 150 beds, prompted by difficulties in caring for patients from the city. Initially, the plan was to attach the new hospital to the then Bonn State Hospital. Merheim was chosen as the site partly because of its proximity to the hospital already established there.
The original concept
The plans ultimately called for a seven-storey building with 160 beds. An adjoining wing was to house a day clinic and a night clinic, each with 20 places, alongside a long-term treatment unit with 75 places.
Range of treatment
The hospital has eight wards for psychiatry and psychotherapy, five wards for addiction disorders, and four gerontopsychiatric wards. It also includes several specialist outpatient clinics and one dedicated to people with addiction disorders. Six day clinics serve general psychiatric patients and people in the second half of life.
Locations and forensic psychiatry
Beyond the Cologne-Merheim site, the hospital operates decentralised facilities in Cologne-Mülheim, Cologne-Bilderstöckchen and Cologne-Chorweiler. It also includes a forensic department, and a separate Forensic Psychiatry unit is located at Porzer Ringstraße 25 in Cologne-Porz.
