Porz-Heumar Station

A railway station where trains no longer stop: passengers last boarded here in 1991, yet the listed former station building still stands beside the Cologne–Overath line.

On the southern edge of a residential neighborhood in Heumar, Oberbergische Bahn trains travelling between Cologne and Lüdenscheid roll straight through this station without stopping.

Did you know?

Although Porz-Heumar station has had no passenger service since 1991, Deutsche Bahn planned to reactivate it in the early 2000s, but the planning approval procedure was dropped in 2005. Today it serves only as an operational station, including for storing freight cars for a nearby waste transfer station.

History

The station opened on 1 August 1910 and has been called "Porz-Heumar" since 25 June 1966. Passenger service ended in 1991, with low passenger numbers cited as the reason.

Plans for Reopening

From the early 2000s, Deutsche Bahn planned to upgrade the line from Cologne to Gummersbach, with Porz-Heumar set to reopen to passengers. Public consultation hearings were held in the following years. In August 2005, however, the City of Cologne informed the Köln-Kalk district council, in response to an inquiry, that the planning approval procedure for the upgrade would not be pursued further.

Operations and Tracks

Today the station serves operational purposes only. It is used, among other things, as a passing loop and for stabling freight wagons needed for the nearby waste transfer station. Each of its two tracks once had its own platform.

The Station Building

The former station building is a listed monument. It was entered in Cologne's register of monuments on 17 September 1996 under number 7943.
