Hohenzollernring 58

The building at Hohenzollernring 58 was the first house in Cologne's Neustadt, with its foundation stone laid on 22 April 1882; today its site is a gap used by a drugstore of only two storeys.
The First House of the Neustadt
This building marked the start of development in Cologne's Neustadt: it was the first house built there. The foundation stone was laid as early as April 1882. The building was regarded as a prime example of the grand rental house in the Italian Renaissance style.
The Façade
The elongated round-arched windows on the top floor were its hallmark. This level was normally just a windowless mezzanine, but because the house was meant for renting out, it was given smaller windows here. The façade was dominated by a central projecting bay that rose over two floors like an oriel and spanned two window axes. Decoration included triple windows, a gable, columns, pilasters, stele-like caryatids and a restrained, convexly curved hipped roof.
Josef Stübben's Neighboring House
Josef Stübben, the planner of the Cologne Ringe, had the narrow house at no. 56 built for himself. Neither this building nor no. 58 has survived. No. 54, by contrast, still stands today.
The Sites Today
The gap left by no. 58 is now occupied by a two-story drugstore. A health food store is housed on the ground floor of no. 56.
