Haus X1
A clothoid-like reinforced-concrete shell spans the house that architect Peter Neufert built as his own home in Köln-Hahnwald in 1961–1962.
The street and garden sides of this house show two opposing faces: red cubes on one side, continuous glazing on the other. Today the building is a protected monument.

Haus X1 is spanned by a slightly upturned, clothoid-like reinforced concrete shell. Its street side consists of red cubes, while the garden side is fully glazed – Peter Neufert built it as his own residence in 1961–1962.
An Architect Builds for Himself
Peter Neufert designed the house not for a client but as his own residence. It was built between 1961 and 1962 in the Cologne district of Hahnwald.
The Roof Shell
A reinforced-concrete shell stretches over the two-storey building. Its shape resembles a clothoid. Where the shell rests on its supports, it is slightly angled upward. The engineer Stefan Polónyi carried out the structural calculations.
Two Facades in Contrast
Facing the street, the facade is made up of red cubes. They vary in size, project slightly outward and leave openings for windows and doors. The garden side, by contrast, is fully glazed. Next to it lies a water basin.
