A Hub for Changing Trains
The station was built on a former field. As a result, it serves mainly as a place to switch between modes of transport and less often as the start or end of a journey. The decisive reason for building it was to link the S-Bahn and the Stadtbahn. KVB bus lines do not serve the station.
History
The station opened in 2006. The plan was to open the S-Bahn halt and the Stadtbahn stop of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) at the same time. Since then, line 1 has terminated here. Its previous terminus, Weiden Schulstraße, was closed the same year, together with the turning loop there.
By Car and Bike
Besides the transfer between rail services, connections to park-and-ride and bike-and-ride facilities were another reason for building the station. These facilities opened at the same time as the station. Since 2022, there have been plans to move them into a multi-storey car park offering spaces for cars as well as for bicycles and other non-motorized vehicles. According to DB, taxis are also available at the station.
Facilities
Ticket machines and validators from both DB and KVB are available. The station is fully lit. The S-Bahn area is partly covered, and the Stadtbahn station has a weather shelter. Restrooms and KVB operational rooms are also located there.
Accessibility
The entire station is equipped with a tactile guidance system for visually impaired passengers. An elevator leads to the S-Bahn platform, making it step-free. Automated audio announcements are made on the platform. There is no Braille.
