Haltepunkt Köln-Lövenich S-Bahn

S-Bahn stop between Lövenich and Weiden, opened in 2002 about 50 metres west of the village's closed old station.

In the timetable and in the DB InfraGO station directory, the stop is simply called “Lövenich”. It should not be confused with Köln-Lövenich station, further to the east, where passengers can no longer board or alight today.

Did you know?

As early as 2 July 1840, the Rheinische Eisenbahn ran its first passenger trains as far as Lövenich. The old station is now a pure overtaking station with no passenger exchange, and the S-Bahn stop sits only about 50 metres further west.

History

Between 1839 and 1841, the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (Rhenish Railway Company) built its main line from Cöln Am Thürmchen station to Aachen Rh station. On 2 July 1840, it began passenger service as far as Lövenich. When work to upgrade the line for high-speed and S-Bahn traffic began in the late 1990s, Lövenich station was closed and its platforms were removed.

New Stop and Relationship to the Old Station

As part of the new S-Bahn line from Köln Hansaring to Düren station, several stops were newly built or rebuilt. The new Lövenich stop was placed about 50 metres west of the former station, at the point where the line crosses state road L 213. The former passenger station is now purely a passing station for trains overtaking one another.

Between Two Districts

The stop lies between Lövenich to the north and Weiden to the south. The platform can be reached from both sides via Brauweiler Straße, by either stairs or lift.

Services

The S 12 runs from Horrem via Köln Hbf and Siegburg/Bonn to Au (Sieg); the S 19 runs from Düren or Sindorf via Köln Hbf and Cologne Bonn Airport to Troisdorf. The S 19 stops at Lövenich every 20 minutes from Monday to Friday. The S 12 serves the stop only during peak hours, likewise every 20 minutes. Together, the two lines therefore provide a 10-minute service between Horrem and Köln Trimbornstraße during those times.
