History

Designed under the supervision of Prussian building inspector Johannes Baptist Kleefisch, the baths were open to all citizens for swimming, saunas, and relaxation. Shortly after the 1912 opening, the concrete roof collapsed, killing one person; the subsequent court proceedings ended in 1916 with the acquittal of all those involved. In 1994 the bathhouse had to close, as the necessary restoration work could not be financed — for several years the building hosted only occasional events, until a complete restoration brought it back to life in 2002.

Architecture

Kleefisch designed the interior in the Art Nouveau style, featuring glass domes and hand-signed wall tiles by Villeroy & Boch. A statue of the young Neptune, the building's namesake, once graced the roughly 5,000 m² swimming hall. The front façade is symmetrical about its centre and follows a strict geometric vocabulary: tall rectangular windows emphasise the vertical, while curving lines are reserved for the arched central portal, two bull's-eye windows, projecting oriels, the round-arched windows of the slated hip roof, and the rooftop tower. This clarity of line was considered remarkably progressive for 1912. The portal is framed by figurative decoration depicting sea creatures.

Today

The building was acquired by Theune Spa Management, which also operates the Claudius Therme in Cologne's Rheinpark. After a full restoration that honoured the original interior traditions, the historic 13-metre-high gilded swimming hall now serves as the fitness area. The spa section retains the listed historic sauna alongside a Japanese sauna and bath landscape.
