About Cologne
Cathedral & landmarks
Two spires, 157 metres tall, more than six centuries in the making: Cologne Cathedral is the city's emblem and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Cologne Cathedral is the city's undisputed emblem. Begun in 1248 and finished only in 1880, it was the tallest building in the world for four years after completion. Inside it holds the Shrine of the Three Kings, one of the most important works of medieval goldsmithing.
More landmarks cluster around the cathedral: the Romanesque church of Groß St. Martin defines the old-town skyline, and the Hohenzollernbrücke now carries tens of thousands of „love locks".
From the riverbank you get the classic postcard view – cathedral, bridge and old town in concert.
