According to legend, the 35-year-old bachelor Jacobus Lüdgen was shot by French marauders at the end of the Seven Years' War after deliberately giving them the wrong directions.

According to the inscription, Wilhelm Lüdgen and Margarete Steinacker donated the cross in memory of their son, the thirty-five-year-old bachelor Jacobus Lüdgen. He is said to have been shot by French marauders near the end of the Seven Years' War, after having led them down a false path.
Structure
The cross is divided into three sections. The lower part consists of a round base bearing the inscription. Above it sits a shell-shaped niche for a devotional figure. The cross itself forms the crowning element at the top.
