The Intermot began as a spin-off of the motorcycle section of Cologne's IFMA bicycle and motorcycle show and was even held in Munich from 1998 to 2004, before Koelnmesse won it back in 2006.

From Cologne to Munich and Back

The motorcycle segment was originally part of the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Exhibition IFMA in Cologne. As the larger section, it split off and became Intermot. Between 1998 and 2004, the fair hosted the event in Munich. For 2006, Koelnmesse brought its former fair back to Cologne. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of exhibitors fell to around 500 in 2022.

A New Date in Competition with Milan

Intermot used to take place in October. From 2024, it was moved to December to leave enough time between it and its Milan rival, EICMA, which has been held in early to mid-November for two decades. After the December editions in 2024 and 2025, Intermot is set to take place in February from 2027. According to the official website, this moves it to the start of the season, when the trade and the community plan for the coming season.

Voices from the Industry

Mike Sommer, head of BMW Motorrad Deutschland and IVM president, is convinced that the new date and the expansion from two to four halls can make the fair the leading show for the entire industry again. Albert Erlacher, Head of Motorcycles at Honda and a member of the IVM executive board, sees the spring date as a chance to bring the industry together early in the season.

Custom Bikes and Electric Motorcycles

The Cologne Custom Championship is held at Intermot. It serves as a qualifying show for the world championship in custom bike building in Sturgis, USA. In 2016/2018, the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building was held directly at the fair. With the e-Motion Show, Intermot was one of the first events dedicated to electric motorcycles.

Touch, Test, Take Home

In the SHOP@INTERMOT area, vendors present their products so that visitors can handle, inspect and take them home straight away. For the 2027 edition, the organizer lists new motorcycles, accessories, gear and test rides as highlights of the program.
