History

The venue traces back to director Walter Bockmayer, who opened the Filmdose pub in 1975 at the corner of Zülpicher and Kyffhäuser Straße and presented his own productions there on a small stage. Out of this setting, the independent "Theater in der Filmdose" was founded in 1984. Over the years, performers who later became widely known appeared here — among them Ralph Morgenstern, Dada Stievermann, Hella von Sinnen and Dirk Bach. The pub was eventually taken over and continued by ensemble member Alexander Moll.

Programme

The house is defined by full-length boulevard productions that often run for several years and give well-known stories a tongue-in-cheek twist. It began with "Geierwally" from 1984 to 1986, followed by titles such as "Sissi – Beuteljahre einer Kaiserin". More recent shows include "Der Exorzist – auf Teufel komm raus!", "Teitänic – die tun nix – die wollen nur cruisen!" and "Splissi – Schicksalsjahre eines Tanzmariechens". Recurring names in the casts include Georg Lenzen and Claus Janzen.

Location

The Filmdose sits in the heart of the university quarter on the lively Zülpicher Straße, at the corner of Kyffhäuser Straße. Using the pub as its stage gives the theatre an intimate, tavern-style setting.
