From Vinegar Works to Stage
The site was originally used to produce spirit and wine vinegar, operated from 1913 under the firm "Max Spiegelberg". That past gives the venue its name, still in use today. Since 1997 moStar Promotion GmbH has run the location as operator and promoter.
Halls and Capacity
The grounds comprise two halls with a combined 850 square metres of event space and room for a maximum of 1,200 guests. The larger hall "1" alone measures 635 square metres and seats a good 800 spectators.
Use Today
Beyond concerts, the rooms host family celebrations, product presentations, company conferences, congresses and carnival events. The Essigfabrik has made a particular name for itself in heavier genres: the Europe-wide Never Say Die! Tour, drawing on metalcore, deathcore, post-hardcore, emocore and hardcore punk, has stopped here several times, as has the related Hell on Earth Tour. The Euroblast Festival also takes place here. Artists who have performed include Die Kassierer, Eluveitie, 5BUGS, Fear Factory, Fler, August Burns Red, Kate Nash, Nas, Oomph!, Röyksopp and Lacrimosa.
Looking Ahead
As part of the planned redevelopment of the Deutz harbour into a new residential quarter, the concert hall of the old Essigfabrik is set to be integrated into the neighbourhood.
