History
The estate first appears in records in 1735, then still called „Paulshof". At that time the lord of the manor transferred ownership to a middle-class family; towards the end of the 18th century the noble Heereman von Zuydtwyck family took over.
Through marriage the estate passed to the von Eltz family in 1835 and has borne the name Eltzhof ever since. From the very beginning the building ensemble belonged to Schloss Wahn – only a tree-lined avenue separates it from the palace garden.
From Farm to Cultural Estate
The complex was laid out as a fully enclosed ensemble grouped around a large inner courtyard. The two-storey residence was built around 1830, joined by workers' houses (1855), a cowshed and barn (1880), a smithy (1850), a pigsty (1865) and a horse stable dating from around 1910.
After the Second World War the leased Eltzhof served the Cologne Chamber of Agriculture as a teaching and experimental estate, where research was carried out on seed propagation, soil improvement and pest control, among other topics. The lease came to an end in 2004.
Present-Day Use
Once the lease had ended, the owning von Eltz-Rübenach family decided to turn the estate into a cultural meeting place and to treat it together with Schloss Wahn as a single ensemble. Working with the Wahn-based artist Roland Kulik, they developed the concept of a cultural and event venue; from 2004 the ensemble was extensively rebuilt in coordination with the city's heritage authority.
Today the Eltzhof houses a theatre for around 450 people as well as a brewery pub with a beer garden run by the Kölner Dom-Brauerei, set in the former farm workers' quarters. There is also an event hall with a foyer and meeting rooms; the historic, cobblestoned inner courtyard hosts open-air events of all kinds. The directly adjoining Schloss Wahn additionally serves as a wedding venue of the Cologne registry office.
Getting There & Opening Hours
The Eltzhof is located at St. Sebastianusstr. 10 in 51147 Köln. By public transport it can be reached via the Köln-Porz-Wahn suburban railway station (lines S12 and S13).
The brewery pub is open Monday to Friday from 5:00 pm, Saturdays from 2:00 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 12:00 noon.
