History and Construction
After KölnBäder assessed the old ice and swimming stadium as no longer economically viable, it closed in early 2007 and was demolished in 2008. The new building rose on the same site, its design emerging from a general planner competition held in 2007. Construction costs came to around €25 million. The design was created by Schulitz Architekten from Braunschweig.
Ice and Sport
The ice sports hall hosts ice hockey, figure skating, public skating sessions, and events. The Kölner EK plays its home games here in the German Sledge Ice Hockey League. On the upper level, a 260-metre-long and 8-metre-wide elevated ice track winds through all parts of the building, available for public skating regardless of weather.
Swimming
The indoor pool features a 25-metre pool, a teaching pool, and a separate children's area, used for both public sessions and school and club sports. The outdoor area is designed as an ecological swimming pond landscape, offering a 50-metre swimming pool, a water slide, and a paddling pool. The natural pond requires no chlorine — plants and microorganisms purify the water, which is why the outdoor pool typically closes on Mondays for regeneration. A sauna area was added as the final construction phase in autumn 2012.
Worth Knowing
The Lentpark is reportedly the first ice sports venue in Europe to be accepted into the EU's Greenbuilding Programme. It is operated by KölnBäder GmbH, a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Köln.
