District

Grengel

Part of borough Porz

Grengel sits in the southeast of Cologne and is one of the sixteen districts that make up the borough of Porz. It began as a garden-city settlement in the early 1930s but was only formally established as a Porz district in 1948; when it was incorporated into Cologne in 1975, the previously independent "Flughafen" district was merged into it. The resulting addition of Cologne Bonn Airport has shaped the area economically and in terms of infrastructure ever since, while its edge-of-city setting and protected landscapes such as the Bieselwald and the Wahner Heide give Grengel considerable value as a local recreation area.
